LEFTEROS / PERSONAL
About me
A friend installed Red Hat on my PC in 1997 and I never stopped tinkering. By day I keep companies’ servers and ERP running; the rest of the time I build things with whatever is new — lately, AI that runs on your own machine.
My name is Lefteris. On Linux-User.gr and almost everywhere else I write as SomniusX.
1997: the first install
That friend had just finished university in the United Kingdom. I was stunned. Hearing about a free operating system is one thing; watching it come up in front of you, with disks, partitions and a command line that does not forgive haste, is another.
I spent about a month reading everything I could find. Then I did it myself: proper partitions, a clean install, without anyone standing over my shoulder. For that time, it was a big deal. After that, Linux stopped being a demonstration and became a tool.
Years of mixing followed. I took part in Knoppel, the Greek take on Knoppix. I had a role in Monomachos Linux, a Mandriva-era fork. I spent time with FreeBSD and its forks. I did not treat one distribution as a creed. I tried things, broke them, and put them back together.
When Apple paid the rent
Later I had to build on Apple’s platform, because that is where the money was at the time — yes, with a small smile on the invoice. I did not move house away from Linux. I learned the language that paid the bills, while free software stayed in the workshop and in my head.
I built and wrote in the Mac and iPhoneOS world: iPhone apps, localisations of everyday Mac software, and years as a member and moderator of Hackintosh communities, with machines that had to boot and stay usable. One wrapper from that time, the first standalone WinBox for Mac, earned me a Level 5 licence from MikroTik. It all lives on in the HellasProject archive. So did repo.hellasproject.com, the first Greek repository for the iPhone, which in January 2010 carried the first Greek translation of Cydia.
2013–2016: game servers, translations and a lot of websites
With the RFS Dev Team we ran Rainbow, one of the busiest Minecraft servers in Europe. During a mass-login event I kept it standing with more than 8,000 simultaneous players: two Xeon servers, users balanced between them and 64 GB of RAM as a disk. The GameAthlon 2013 story is written up, and I also spoke about all this at HAEC.
In the same years I translated: more than 37,200 changes to the Greek MIUI, texts for OnePlus under NDA, Call Recorder and tTorrent. And I built websites — more than ten, for shipping companies, print shops and travel agencies — along with hosting, game servers and offices moved to the cloud. The first sites ran on Joomla, Drupal and e107, the later ones on WordPress, and the shops on PrestaShop, OpenCart and CubeCart before settling on WooCommerce. Graphics, print and logos went through Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom, Acrobat) or, on Linux, GIMP and Inkscape. Video, from Rainbow’s YouTube channel and live streams onwards, I cut for years in iMovie and Final Cut on the Mac and in Sony Vegas and Premiere on Windows; these days in DaVinci Resolve.
Shipping, under NDA
One part of my path you will not find with names. I worked as IT and as Head of IT for shipping companies. The sector works much like a security company: what you see stays inside, and the work is still covered by NDA today. So here you will find what was done, not who it was for.
2017–2025: IT manager and ERP
Then came the retail and logistics years: IT manager and ERP consultant at companies with tills (cashier tills), warehouses and scanners that never stop. Singular, Cubit, Epsilon, Microsoft servers and data bridges between all of them. Where a tool was missing, I wrote it, in Batch for the Windows servers and in Bash and Python for everything else: scripts that test thermal receipt printers over ESC/POS and Zebra label printers in EPL and ZPL, Ghostscript jobs that turn out PDFs with properly embedded fonts, and in 2022 I built eight small apps that watch the back office and shout when something goes wrong.
Alongside, I started writing on Linux-User.gr. My guides and discussions there now number nearly seventy, all in Greek.
Now
By day I am the EDP, IT, ICT and project manager: I bring a company’s data into one place (EDP, electronic data processing) and get its systems — ERP, CRM, accounting, cash flow, BI reports — talking to each other.
The rest of the time:
- RecMeets' Laya — a model of my own on Hugging Face, trained on my computer, that finds which words of a transcript were misheard, in Greek and English. Open for anyone who needs it.
- CrossInk in Greek — Greek letters, hyphenation and a Greek menu for the open firmware of Xteink e-readers. Test build.
- CrossInk-Indic — the same firmware with 13 Indic languages and Burmese built in, for every Xteink model. Pre-release; the Burmese build is already on a reader’s X4 Pro in Myanmar.
- RecMeets — private meeting recording with local transcription. Coming soon.
- ShadowRealms AI — a local AI Storyteller for World of Darkness chronicles, Classic and V5, in English and Greek, with voice (you hear the chat read aloud and speak your lines) and with the chronicle so far: the local model writes every chronicle’s minutes, night by night, and the AI Storyteller remembers them. At v0.31.0, with a trailer.
- dwm-titus — patches for Chris Titus's Fedora desktop: hidden Wi-Fi, keyboard layouts, a clock with seconds, and skills that keep terminal assistants on the right files.
- nema — patches for Thanos Apollo's XMPP messenger for Android, sent the old way, by email.
- Libreboot on ThinkPads, a T480 as declarative NixOS (in Greek), tools for Omarchy and the call for the first Omarchy Greece meetup (in Greek).
Away from the screen, music comes first. I come from a family with many musicians. I hold a piano diploma from the Greek National Conservatory, with studies in harmony, counterpoint and fugue; I also play guitar, compose, and record my own audio samples. A good part of my free time went to recording studios and sound stages over the years.
Then the house: I am slowly turning it into a smart home, from lamps and switches to more complex systems, with Raspberry Pi and Arduino boards driving switches and small embedded devices. And still wireless networking with AWMN and light personal electric vehicles, such as the electric unicycle (EUC) and others.
The LEFTEROS company
LEFTEROS was my IT services company. The name stayed; the site became personal. The service archive keeps that experience and the story of the logo keeps its path. If you have something specific in mind, tell me — let’s talk.
FOR FUN
Fun facts
- A friend showed me Red Hat in 1997. A month later I installed it myself, partitions and all, and never went back.
- During a mass-login event our Minecraft server hit 8,000+ players at once. It held on two Xeons, 64 GB of RAM used as a disk and a lot of nerve. The story, which I also told at HAEC.
- My first standalone WinBox for Mac earned me a Level 5 licence from MikroTik.
- A 1:10 map of Ancient Greece in Minecraft that we built made the SKAI evening news in 2016.
- I moderated Hackintosh forums for years and ran HellasProject from 2007 to 2014.
- These days I flash Libreboot onto ThinkPads for fun, and I called the first Omarchy Greece meetup (in Greek).
WITH EVIDENCE
What I do
Eight things I do well — each with pages that show it.
ERP and business systems
Twenty years on retail, logistics and commercial ERP: Semantic, Cubit, Singular / Epsilon, Soft1. I centralise the data (EDP, electronic data processing), build bridges between systems and the reports that keep them honest.
Infrastructure and servers
Windows and Linux servers, virtual machines (Proxmox, ESXi, KVM), NAS, Microsoft 365, backups and disaster-recovery plans. Offices moved to the cloud that stayed up.
Linux, down to the firmware
From Red Hat in 1997 to Libreboot on ThinkPads, declarative NixOS and tools for Omarchy. When something works, I write the guide in Greek.
Local AI and speech
Models that run on your own machine: an RPG narrator with RAG memory, meeting transcription without the cloud, offline dictation, and a model of my own on Hugging Face that finds misheard words.
Servers under pressure
With the RFS Dev Team we kept an event with more than 8,000 simultaneous players standing: two Xeon servers, users balanced between them and 64 GB of RAM as a disk. I also spoke about it at HAEC.
Greek on every screen
More than 37,200 changes to the MIUI translation, OnePlus texts under NDA, Call Recorder, tTorrent, Mac localisations, the guide to Greek on Linux, and now Greek in CrossInk, right down to e-ink readers.
Small tools that stick
The first standalone WinBox for Mac earned me a Level 5 licence from MikroTik. CarNotify is still in use. Moto X scripts, ERP helpers and bash for every everyday nuisance.
Writing and sharing
Nearly 70 guides and discussions on Linux-User.gr, forum moderation since the Hackintosh days, and the call for the first Omarchy Greece meetup.

A fine-tune of Laya that finds which words of a transcript were misheard, in Greek and English. Data from real Whisper mistakes on FLEURS, RLCD training on an RTX 4080 SUPER, ONNX quantization to 343 MB with no loss of accuracy. AUROC 0.91 in Greek, close to the cloud, but local and open (Apache 2.0). Along the way, loops and quiet voices were fixed in RecMeets.
