LEFTEROS / PERSONAL NOTES
WinBox on Mac
1 September 2013 / Lefteris Iliadis / SomniusX
Historical text from HellasProject (2009–2014). It is not current advice or a present-day service.
This is a Greek (AWMN-Wiki) translation of a MikroTik Wiki page.
You do not need extra MacPorts/Darwine-style stacks that can hurt the system if you mishandle them. The “dangerous” path is still on the MikroTik-for-Mac wiki. On an Intel Mac you can wrap winbox.exe with Wine and WineBottler. I already shipped a standalone WinBox.app (54.4 mb) that runs on Intel Macs with no extra installs: unzip and run. You can also roll your own.

Part 1 — Prepare
To build a standalone wrapper you need:
- an Intel Mac
- Leopard or Snow Leopard, ideally fully updated
- WineBottler downloaded and installed
Part 2 — WineBottler
Launch it from Applications. The first window:
- Kill a stuck Wine process
- Run existing prefixes
- Install predefined prefixes (list in note 5)
- Create a custom prefix (next section)
- List of ready-made prefixes
- Skip licence dialogs (read licences anyway)
- Install
Part 3 — Custom prefix
Choose Create Custom Prefix:
- Select File… and open
winbox.exe - Tick Copy Only… — it is a standalone exe, not an installer
- Tick Include Wine binaries… so the .app is complete
- Install, then Save As: MikroTik WinBox, pick a folder (usually Applications), Save
Wait for the progress dialogs until Prefix Created Successfully.
Done
You now have a native-feeling standalone MikroTik WinBox on Mac. The same pattern wraps other Windows programs.
Have Fun MikroTik-Mates!
