Speaking of the iPhone 4!

It has been a while now since the iPhone 4 shipped in Greece. A lot of people rushed to bring it from abroad when it was not yet on our shelves and they found it hard because they were not informed that foreign ones are locked to the carrier (e.g. AT&T) and “if” they are lucky with jailbreak the unlock will stick (see ultrasn0w), and I put it that way because many people report signal drops for no reason, it loses the SIM and only after a reboot does it see it. Anyway, that is only for the “foreign” models, because the domestic ones are “factory unlocked”, meaning they work everywhere and with all SIMs!

At the start some guys popped up like mushrooms on “known” neighbouring sites/forums that host sale/wanted ads, trying to step on people’s ignorance and unmatched urge to buy the “4” at “any price”; unfortunately for a few 24 hours those buyers were victims of the “madness” and their consumer binge, because when prices settled they were much lower than the black-marketeers who had bought them.

Then we started the questions again on the usual sites/forums..

how does this work
why does it want a credit card
do I have to pay
I want it all “now” and cracked on a plate
etc etc..

In other words, friends, they dropped 800+€ and then for a Greek app they “cannot” find “cracked” they go mad and swear and shout etc.. Then they blame the signal that does not catch well and hang on the well-known “antennagate” story that applies to all mobiles anyway. Then they blame jailbreak because it is slow and eats battery.. while the fault is that they have loaded 60MB of themes and other extras so they themselves are at fault.. They do not look to put it in a case, oh no, it has to be seen, shown off everywhere and always, (yes I mean you, pal on the bus who were playing cool), congratulations and enjoy that you bought it, did anyone tell you I need to see you waving it like I will not say, with the sound at full because you want it heard that you are playing some car app..? Or whenever someone sees that one of the group has it “ah big deal mine does this and that”.

Like it or not all of Greece knows what the iPhone is, kids; we have had it and shown it off since 2007, still carrying on like this? Mercy!!

Even the “girlfriends” you leave it on the cafe table do not pay it any attention..

Now you will say, hang on Lefteris you swept everything, why not, I will say?! Must we hide behind our phones and posts/comments; the truth in part is this! I have mentioned it before and I have been roasted! Very few people will leave a perfectly good 3GS to go to the 4, and those are the ones who work the device near 100% of its capabilities and apps. Go to the 4 for the camera? not enough; for the screen, OK it is good, but still not enough justification; speed, second camera, the list goes on and on!

Finally, I am one of those who bought it recently. I did not take it for showing off, otherwise I would have it naked and show it at every chance (I have seen fake calls with the screen off, what a joke). On the contrary I got it a nice “ugly” and “thick” case, and films, why? Because that way it is protected! I cannot say I do not also feel the need to show it off, I am Greek too, I have not escaped, but I got it being an iPhone Developer, because it offers business apps (TeamViewer and others for remote and for work), and because it had earned its money before it even reached my hands!
I have a need to be up to date in hardware the way a computer will need an upgrade to cope!

Unfortunately there were people who were victims of its fame who even took a loan to get it, like the guy who gave me mine, and it came out 400+€ without them knowing if it even suits them! Then they struggle even to pay it off and whoosh, there is the ad again but this time cheaper. There go the “vultures” again, they buy it under cost and sell it to us “again” at purchase price. Personally I have faced 4 people so far! Exception the guy who gave me mine at its real price for a 32GB, anyway..

I had wanted for a while to get the above off my chest and I am not ashamed to speak in public; face it, that is how things are. In some cases lighter, in others stronger.
