Jailbreak – end of an era

22 March 2013 / Lefteris Iliadis / SomniusX

Historical text from HellasProject (2009–2014). It is not current advice or a present-day service.

Quite a while ago, when iOS 6 shipped as the firmware our favourite devices run, the jailbreak scene made several attempts to ship the first jailbreak! They managed it when they gathered and made evasi0n, a jailbreak tool that used 5+ exploits so we could have one of the most stable jailbreaks after 5.1.1!

The day before yesterday, though, 20 March of the martyred year 2013, version 6.1.3 shipped, first to address the passcode-lock security issue, which can still be bypassed one way (by removing the SIM, but that is not the point here), so they achieved nothing in that area, and clearly to close/patch the exploits, some of which date from the 3GS launch!!

Huge damage for the jailbreak scene, enormous.. first there is a solution only on devices with an A4 processor, and to be clearer, iPhone 3GS, 4, iPad 1 and 2 in specific cases, and iPod touch 4th generation and below are the only ones that can legitimately, provided SHSH keys are available, go to 6.1.2 or whatever else; everything newer from A5 and up… THE END! We are talking devices like iPhone 4S and 5, iPad 3 & 4 & Mini, iPod Touch 5th gen!! Either you stay on the firmware you are on now, with jailbreak or without, or you go to 6.1.3 and you do not jailbreak, “and” there is no going back! So dear friends, whoever wants to experiment, this time it would be better to sit on your eggs!

Anyone who buys one of the recent devices mentioned off the shelf is the only one with hopes of earlier firmware and a chance of jailbreak!

In general we have entered a dark era where people will start avoiding jailbreak again, first because it is not easy, second because for some who want it it is not possible, and all that sourness and negativity will take us back to “mama’s” stock phones.. add that it is also in dark shades of grey whether they will find exploits again and put them together into a successful jailbreak like evasi0n! They gave us the jailbreak and also burned its future!

I am not a pessimist, I just have eyes and see, from years of watching how the jailbreak scene and Apple move! probably when iOS 7 ships we will see a brighter day!

P.S. note that no form of piracy using jailbreak methods is recommended, only improving device use with capabilities, and maybe appearance, that Apple does not offer, and whatever capabilities developers need!!
