LEFTEROS / PERSONAL NOTES
iPhone 4S, Siri & Jailbreak [Updated]

Historical text from HellasProject (2009–2014). It is not current advice or a present-day service.
I had wanted for a while to write about several running topics and, yes, to say them a bit bluntly.
“Mama” Apple gave us her new creation, the iPhone 4S, and even if we had no trousers to wear we ran, or would run, to make it ours.
Fair enough, it is good: faster, extra graphics, and a great camera in an iPhone 4 body that is not a thick phone..
One extra is the “Humble Assistant Siri”, an AI that tries, talking to Apple’s servers and the outside world, to answer you and give results, and if you say something odd it even has cheek.
Fine, you will say, even my grandmother has heard this, where are you going brother..? I will get there.
For days there have been “proofs” from users on Twitter that they ported Siri and all its functions to iPhone 4, and later to iPad and iPod Touch. They claim it works perfectly “for them” and even have well-known iDevice community beta testers confirming it. Their FAQ says they have not yet finished talking to Apple’s servers because a 4S is required or they do not answer. Then they say they will create a service on their own servers as a man-in-the-middle, and that we would obviously have to pay every month, because they mention the word subscription, and so on. So far the only thing they have achieved, in my opinion, and I may be wrong, is noise around the topic, essentially attracting “victims” who like photos and videos so they will hand over their “kind donations”.
When I tried to contact them, since they discuss it openly and comment, I got the silent treatment, because I was apparently asking something it did not suit them to answer? All I stressed is that there are more than enough BSD/Linux tools on the iPhone via Cydia that can sniff packets and change headers or whatever so they go as a 4S — a simple daemon, or a proxy. And in the end a few UI elements aside, it is not something that cannot be done! Sherif Hashim did the same with the iPad 1 3G, bringing over anything related to Phone and Messages, making the needed baseband links, and some people have a proper iPad phone!
I got nowhere.. they were off on their third ear!
update 1: in the article comments you will find the needed files plus a guide on how to bring the GUI, i.e. the user interface elements, to your own device exactly as the others have done so far!
update 2: also, in a reply to friend nsxbass’s comment you will see a video of “real” Siri running on an iPod Touch of @chpwn
Yesterday (28-10-11), the day the 4S launched in more countries, the well-known MuscleNerd pops up and says “dudes, I can haz jailbreak” and gives us a photo.. from iSSH that he got an SSH session on a 4S. OK, I am not saying there is no jailbreak; there is, but not like that.
I mean from day one it existed, why tell us nothing.. How do I put this..
To find an exploit you only need a firmware mistake, a memory allocation that was not emptied and crashes, some kind of bug or a way to interfere with memory that is or has been reserved!
So.. remember “day 1” of the iOS 5 launch…? Fine, you will also remember the “trick” that puts Newsstand (or “kiosk” [ugh]) in a folder. It was not hard; the timing just had to be right. If you tried it you will have noticed that Newsstand “does not” run from a folder made that way, and SpringBoard crashes — I say again, SpringBoard “crashes”! So someone with a debug cable immediately sees the memory point of the crash, drops a jump, and boom, root access! Yes! That could “easily” be a userland jailbreak in the style of Jailbreakme.com !!!
So the 4S jailbreak they have, if not that way, is certainly another.. from “day 1”; they simply let time pass and the “crisis” that hits some people (like me) who keep asking.. Let the world see what new iOS 5 offers, let things calm down before they start again with jailbreak etc.!
Also, there is “no” untethered jailbreak for iOS 5. There is a semi-tethered boot from BigBoss but it does not work on devices with AppSync. People say it works but that is not true, and some repositories besides BigBoss have (wrongly) lifted the restrictions.. and it still does not work. Saurik needs to ship a new MobileSubstrate so an updated AppSync can sit on top of Substrate and not change hard files. Then hackulo.us and BigBoss will update their files for a complete semi-tethered with AppSync!
To close this long piece, we iDevice lovers need a more specific approach to things some people serve us on a plate. Quite a few of “ours” out there have fallen victim to sites promising an untethered jailbreak for a fee.. THERE IS NO untethered jailbreak, get that into your head. And the well-known teams that work on this “do not” sell software; they give it away (see redsn0w, PwnageTool, etc.).
Those “few” words, friends.. I got it off my chest and I hope we share the same views!!
