LEFTEROS / PERSONAL NOTES

Greek on 10.6.2 (from Apple!!?)

28 March 2010 / Lefteris Iliadis / SomniusX

Historical text from HellasProject (2009–2014). It is not current advice or a present-day service.

There were quite a few rumors, and talks of a full OS translation, since I can now even edit compiled nibs.

But the rumors are over..

from WeWantAppleGreece.com

At last,

They had us struggling for so long. We are talking about a fight by many people, including well-known ThrilOSX (Vangelis) of Greek-Mac.com, who from the age of Noah, literally, fought tooth and nail with his packages to Greek-ify the OS.

As WeWantAppleGreece.com says in its article…

Unexpected, highly important, and altogether pleasant news for Greek users of the Apple-Mac platform.
Yes, at last we have a complete Greek environment, and it is not an upgrade of the known GR-Update, nor a new volunteer effort from the Greek Mac community. Mentions of third-party efforts are made without in the least diminishing the value of those precious helpers that accompanied many Mac users for years.
Now, though, for those who need Greek text in the OS menus and in the programs Apple includes, there is a separate package that “contains the full set of Greek components for Mac OS X 10.6.2,” as the installer text says.

The discovery was made during a routine check of the Greek distributor’s pages, iSquare, where following the link to Software Downloads, besides the existing pointer to the company’s special software and updates page (new language tools, GR-Update, etc.), there is now also a pointer to: Greek Mac OS X.

From tests, the package is not only complete, it also offers a very good translation level.

Another thing found is the following, which will stun quite a few people.

The version for Mac OS X 10.6.2 “is given free to Greek users and Apple makes sure it is available a few days after every Mac OS X update”…

In other words they will include it on every machine sold in Greece. We only hope it does not break on future updates.. and…

there will also be a separate [Greek iTunes 9.0.2]

Which you can also download.

The whole Greek story at least shows that every so often (see Greek on the iPhone) they remember that here in the CEMEA region there are enough sales to support us a bit more..

Let’s see now when iWork and iLife will be ready.
