LEFTEROS / PERSONAL NOTES
The history of GNU/Linux distributions to date
16 October 2010 / Lefteris Iliadis / SomniusX
Historical text from HellasProject (2009–2014). It is not current advice or a present-day service.

GNU/Linux has a rich history of newer and older distributions. The GNU/Linux distro timeline aims to present that history over time, remind older users of earlier eras, and educate new ones.
The latest GNU/Linux Distro Timeline (or gldt among friends) also covers recent changes such as the creation of Linux Mint Debian Edition (lmde), the rename of sidux to aptosid, and the addition of Mageia (the Mandrake fork).
The GNU/Linux Distro Timeline is available as svg, png, and tar.bz2. The tar.bz2 file has what you need to open the timeline in gnuclad, a specialized clade-diagram program, so you can make your own timeline if you want.
