“Apple in the US appears to be in the sights of the competent competition authorities again after changing iOS terms of use around advertising.”_
With the GM of iOS and the SDK, Apple refreshed the developer terms that you must accept to use Apple’s services. Section 3.3.9 of the iOS agreement was changed: user data may be obtained only with user consent, and only if it is given to independent ad providers whose main business is mobile advertising. As AppleInsider reports, the terms limit ad services from companies that also ship their own mobile devices and operating systems — which in practice leaves Google’s AdMob and Microsoft out of the iOS platform.
Related sources say competition authorities showed interest, though it is not yet clear which department will take the investigation. Gossip says Apple chose this policy to monopolize ads on its devices ahead of its own iAds platform. Steve Jobs, in an interview at the D8 conference, cited user privacy, even pointing to an analytics company that published data about devices used on the Apple campus without anyone knowing.
