Cydia app iProxy – fight for tethering

19 March 2010 / Lefteris Iliadis / SomniusX

Historical text from HellasProject (2009–2014). It is not current advice or a present-day service.

A short prologue before iProxy.app.

Yesterday iTunes pushed a Vodafone carrier-settings update. Anyone who applied it lost tethering, and from then on Vodafone would charge for mobile internet that had been free since the WAP days — with no real warning.

Internet from the phone. What is the difference if I browse on the phone or on a laptop I just tethered? The megabytes still flow; faster use should even help the carrier. I do not get the sudden change.

Personal take: a quiet, overnight tweak that made it all the way into Apple’s iTunes update pipeline. Greece, in all its glory.

If you can no longer share Internet to a laptop, I found iProxy (Apache License, tcurdt, GitHub). A paid Apple developer can ad-hoc share a build (~100 devices) to people who are not jailbroken. Jailbroken devices can run it without that.

I localized it into Greek and put it on our Cydia repo. Details on the iPhone iProxy project page.
